What is the best way to care for wood cutting boards?
- Regular Cleaning
- Hand wash only: Use warm water, a mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Never soak or put in the dishwasher — that’s a fast track to warping and cracking.
- Dry immediately: Pat dry with a towel and let it air dry standing upright to prevent moisture buildup.
- Oil regularly: Whenever the board looks dry or feels rough, use food-grade mineral oil or a beeswax blend. Apply generously, let it soak overnight, and wipe off excess. This keeps the wood hydrated and prevents splitting.
- Occasional Deep Clean
- Sanitize: For meat-heavy use, wipe with a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar in 1 cup water. For deeper cleaning, sprinkle coarse salt and scrub with half a lemon.
- Deodorize: Baking soda paste (baking soda + water) works wonders for lingering smells.
- What to Avoid
- No bleach or harsh chemicals — they damage the wood and leave residues.
- No prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight — it can cause warping.
- No stacking wet boards — they’ll trap moisture and mold.
